From 1 February 2026, specialist GPs/NPs working within their area of practice will be able to diagnose and prescribe for adults with ADHD. Implementation will take time and is voluntary. Not all GPs/NPs will provide these services. It is expected that those with a special interest in ADHD will provide these services. New ADHD services will develop gradually as clinicians who have a special interest in ADHD to build competence in ADHD care. ADHD diagnosis still requires a comprehensive assessment.
Prescribing will continue to follow existing regulatory and clinical guidelines to ensure quality care and prevent misuse. Pharmac is actively managing supply and exploring alternative brands and treatments to support increased demand.
We not have any current plans to provide an ADHD assessment service at our practice. You can talk to your GP/NP about a referral. If you have had an ADHD assessment from a practitioner who is providing this service, you can discuss this with your GP/NP including getting advice on how medication will be prescribed.
